Marc Cucurella discloses he had to Google one of Chelsea’s January signings

Marc Cucurella admits that he had no knowledge of his Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez when the World Cup began, but became impressed by his displays for Argentina and had to resort to searching for him on Google.

After showcasing impressive performances in Qatar and maintaining excellent form for Benfica, Enzo Fernandez became the most costly player in Premier League history following Chelsea’s agreement to pay a staggering £106.8million on the last day of the transfer window.

Enzo Fernandez’s transfer to Chelsea was an extraordinary achievement for the midfielder, given that just six months prior, he was still playing for River Plate and had not received any call-up from his national team.

His quick rise from the Argentinian league to becoming the most expensive player in the Premier League was even surprising to his new teammate Cucurella, who was unaware of him before his impressive World Cup performance.

Cucurella had initially tuned in to watch his former teammate Alexis Mac Allister in the tournament, but was instead impressed by Fernandez’s performance, which prompted him to Google the midfielder’s name.

“I liked to watch matches in which my friends were playing, so I was watching Argentina because of Alexis,” Cucurella told the South American edition of ESPN’s Sports Center.

“I think I said, “I really like number 24, he’s very good!” But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone!

“As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea!

“I told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbeque.

“He is very young, but he is very talented with the ball and he is intelligent. He’s still adapting but he’s already played some good games. We have [signed] a great midfielder.”
