Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is lining Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho to do similar duties to what he anticipates Jack Grealish will do for Manchester City this term.

After months of speculation, Sancho, who will be aiming to make his first start in United colours when they face Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, finally sealed a move to Old Trafford last month, joining the club from German giants Borussia Dortmund in a £72.9million deal.

His arrival at Old Trafford has sent out a affirmation of intent to United’s Premier League rivals as well as ultimately solving their long-term search for a right-sided winger.

Now, Arsenal legend Wright has backed Sancho to perform a similar task to what new City signing Grealish will do, in terms of causing problems when getting on the ball and running at defenders who are sitting deep.

“The signing of someone like Sancho, like Grealish at City, he gives you a different problem when he gets on the ball if players are going to stay deep,” Wright told Premier League Productions, as cited by HITC Sport.

“He will take players out of the game with skills. I think this is one of the biggest factors for United this season.”

As well as revealing that he considers Sancho will prove to be a big hit for United this season, Wright also revealed that he reckons Sancho could significantly improve United’s attacking output down the right-wing.

As proven on no shortage of occasions last season, and three times last weekend against Leeds United, United tend to get a lot of joy down their left side in an attacking spirit, with the likes of Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford causing havoc for opposing defenders.

“We know their left side is brilliant,” Wright added. “What Luke Shaw does, when Rashford is playing, everything comes from that side for some reason.

“The right-hand side; I’d love to see the percentages of goals created from this side. I’m sure it would be a lot, lot further behind than the left.

“Jadon Sancho will bring that right up. He will create when people do that low block.

“I think that he is somebody who will take players out of the game with skills going into the box, more free-kicks, more opportunities to get the ball in the box for people like Harry Maguire and (Raphael) Varane.”
