Manchester United told they can ‘hurt’ Liverpool by utilizing clear weakness

According to Reds legend Steve Nicol, Manchester United can “hurt” Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Liverpool enters the game against their bitter rivals unbeaten in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, United has gone winless in their last three Premier League games.

Liverpool are the odds-on favorites for Sunday’s game, having won the same game 4-2 last season.

Nicol, on the other hand, believes United have a weakness at the back that they can exploit.

According to the pundit, United should target Joel Matip, who has started seven of the eight league games this season alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Nicol told EPSN FC: “Van Dijk and Matip as a partnership against Atletico Madrid were awful. I think that’s the only way you can put it.

“And so, if I’m Manchester United, the areas I’m looking to hurt are in-behind Matip, no question.

“Van Dijk, I’m still going to say you don’t want anything to do with him. He did have a bad game but we know the guy’s quality.

“I think they’ve absolutely got to go after Matip because this Liverpool line over the last 18 months to two years has been a very high line, which I don’t particularly like.

“But it’s been solid, they’ve all been on the same page, they haven’t had guys drifting apart and dropping deep.

“But that’s what happened the other night with Matip, he kept dropping and being five and 10 yards behind the other three.

“So if I’m Manchester United, that’s what I’m looking at, that’s what I’m going for.”

The match on Sunday has been billed as Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Mohamed Salah, pitting two of the world’s best players against each other.

When asked to choose between the two, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, understandably, sided with his player.

“I’ll always back Cristiano in any competition,” said the Norwegian.

“He’s unique. That being said, Salah, at the moment, he’s on fire. We know we have to be at our best to defend against him.

“We have to enjoy the players, [though] not Salah on Sunday, of course.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claims that comparing the two players is unnecessary.

“I never thought about that,” said Klopp. “Why should we compare Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah? Obviously both are world-class players, so that’s how it is.

“I would say even when Ronaldo’s left foot is not that bad, but I would say Mo’s left foot is probably better.

“Maybe then Cristiano in the air is slightly better and the right foot is probably better. But speed-wise they are both pretty quick, very desperate to score goals – so maybe that’s it.”
