Axel Tuanzebe was spotted at Carrington training for the first time since July.

Tuanzebe spent the initial part of preseason training alongside new manager Erik ten Hag and the first team, and even travelled to Thailand for the club’s first leg of its preseason trip.

Since the defender left the tour early without playing a game, he has been injured and out of action.

Thursday at Carrington, Tuanzebe was seen training with individual drills, accelerating his rehabilitation.

Tuanzebe skipped United’s training camp in Spain last week because, in coordination with the club’s medical staff, he remained in Manchester to focus on his recuperation.

Now he has taken the next step, stepping out onto the grass at Carrington to increase his fitness level.

The club’s website claimed last week that Tuanzebe was ‘on the path to recovery,’ with an image of him in the gym working on a customized training regimen.

The center-back is aiming to return in “the second half of the season,” although no exact timetable has been set.

Tuanzebe turned 25 last month and must play in order for this season to be salvageable. He is, at best, Manchester United’s  fifth-choice defender, after Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof.

Last season, he moved out on loan to Aston Villa and subsequently Napoli, but an injury spoiled his time in Serie A.

Tuanzebe would benefit from a loan move, but there is a brief window for him to break into the first squad while Varane and Martinez are at the World Cup. However, Tuanzebe will have to race against the clock to get fully fit before their return.
