Manchester United suffer major blow as their main star injured ahead of derby clash against City
Raphael Varane suffered a hamstring injury on Tuesday, which could be a major setback for Manchester United ahead of their derby clash with Manchester City.
Varane was forced to miss Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the manager, later revealed that the initial assessment of the center-injury back’s “doesn’t look good.”
After Varane left the field in the 38th minute after kickoff, Solskjaer replaced him with Mason Greenwood and switched his defense formation to a back four after starting with five.
“He felt his hamstring as he ran there. So of course you can’t take any risks, unfortunately. Rafa has been such a calming influence when he’s on the pitch. We lost him but that’s football. He didn’t want to risk anything. First assessment doesn’t look good. Fingers crossed,” Solskjaer said in a post-match press conference Tuesday in Italy, Man Utd’s official website showed.
Varane’s situation does not appear to be improving ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday. Solskjaer’s team is currently fifth in the 2021-22 Premier League table with 17 points, three fewer than reigning champions Manchester City, who are third.
Varane joined Manchester United from Real Madrid this summer for a fee of $56 million. Varane missed three games earlier this season due to a groin injury. The France international has only made nine appearances for his new club so far.
