Scott McTominay of Manchester United  has been suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season.

During his brief substitute appearance against Everton, the midfielder received a booking.

McTominay came on as an 83rd-minute substitute, getting only four touches as United had to dig in and defend to hold off Everton’s late rally.

United won 2-1 thanks to goals from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his 700th club goal.

McTominay’s suspension coincides with Erik ten Hag’s shift, which has seen the Scotland international drop to the bench in favor of Casemiro.

Casemiro had a mixed game against Everton, but he came through it well in the end after a shaky start, assisting Ronaldo’s winner.

McTominay’s suspension isn’t a huge loss because Casemiro was expected to start next Saturday.

McTominay will almost certainly start in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia in midweek. Last Thursday, he was a substitute against them.

United will want to rest Casemiro ahead of Sunday’s match against Newcastle, which kicks off at 2 p.m. at Old Trafford.

The game could be pivotal, with Manchester United in fifth place, one point ahead of Newcastle in sixth. The Red Devils have a game in hand and can close the gap with a win over Eddie Howe’s team.

The midfield will most likely consist of Casemiro, Eriksen, and Fernandes, with Fred and McTominay possibly coming in against Omonia.
