Manchester United are reportedly considering terminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in January if a buyer cannot be found.

The superstar’s future at Old Trafford appears to be in jeopardy after he was left out of the squad to face Chelsea on Saturday in response to walking down the tunnel before full-time in Wednesday’s win over Tottenham.

Ronaldo has since taken to Instagram to reiterate his commitment to Manchester United. “Sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us,” he wrote.

“Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option.”

However, according to The i  if agent Jorge Mendes is unable to find a new club for client Cristiano in the new year, United may release him from his contract six months early.

The 37-year-old handed in a transfer request in the summer, but with few options outside of Manchester United, he ultimately stayed.

According to the I, no decision has been made on what to do with sulking Ronaldo in the long run, with the dust still settling after Wednesday’s record low in the relationship. But the fact that the club is willing to take such a big loss to get him off the books tells you everything you need to know about where we are in the saga.
