The Red Devils have made a few bid decisions following their opening-day defeat to Brighton, which sent the United board into a panic fury.

Manchester United appear to have shifted their focus to two new midfielder targets, while Chelsea are said to be ‘very close’ to signing Frenkie de Jong following a key Barcelona transfer update.

There have been points in this ever-changing saga where all possibilities have seemed to be on the verge of becoming reality, but there now appears to be some more clear direction in relation to what will happen with the 25-year-old.

According to  The Athletic, amid a dispute with Barcelona over deferred wages that the club refuses to pay after discovering a hint of  ‘criminality’ in his previous contract extension, the players’ camp believes that his adamant stance to stay has been weakened by recent events.

Despite both manager Xavi and president Joan Laporta speaking highly of the Dutchman, the pair are hoping that a sale of the £70 million rated midfielder will provide the funds, along with the fourth economic lever, to not only register the new recruits with La Liga, but also to fund an ambitious £68 million swoop for Bernardo Silva.

De Jong has refused to sign a new cut-price contract with Barcelona, and unlike Gerard Pique, who has made the sacrifice, the midfielder’s future at the club is now bleak, with Chelsea reportedly ‘very close.’

According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, after these new contract talks with the Camp Nou club fall through, De Jong’s move to Chelsea will ‘heat up’ even more.

He went on to say that the writing has been on the wall for Barcelona’s number 21 since the club’s US tour began.

Man United were initially thought to be the most likely destination given the player in question’s strong relationship with new manager Erik ten Hag.

However, with rumours circulating that De Jong wants Champions League football, The Red Devils have shifted their focus elsewhere, with a £77.5 million swoop in mind.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United have agreed to pay £20 million for Adrien Rabiot, with personal terms still being worked out.

Meanwhile, the club is contemplating a £57.5 million bid for long-term target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
