Manchester United identify Arsenal flop as Cristiano Ronaldo replacement after the Portuguese requested to leave
Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, who might just replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who has asked a transfer away from Old Trafford.
According to reports on Saturday, Ronaldo informed United that he wanted to leave the club in order to continue playing in the Champions League, and that he had urged Erik ten Hag to sell him if an acceptable offer was made.
While United are determined to keep the 37-year-old, a prospective alternative has already been identified in the form of winger Gnabry, who rejected down a new contract with Bayern worth just over £200,000 per week.
As a result, the Bundesliga heavyweights are ready to sell the 26-year-old before his deal ends next summer, and United are interested in the former Arsenal star but may face competition from local rivals Manchester City, according to The Sun.
City have already sold Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal this summer and are about to lose another attacker with Raheem Sterling’s move to Chelsea looming, so Pep Guardiola may attempt to bring in a replacement, despite signing strikers Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
As a result, Guardiola is thought to be more focused on acquiring Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella and completing the signing of Leeds defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
This might pave the way for United to sign Gnabry, who would provide much-needed depth to United’s front line, which would appear toothless if Ronaldo were to go.
Gnabry, formerly considered an Arsenal flop, has evolved into a great winger in recent years, scoring 64 goals and assisted 40 in four seasons while winning four league titles and the Champions League.
Bayern Munich will consider offers in the range of £35 million for the German international, and the club is also one of the frontrunners to recruit Cristiano Ronaldo, along with Roma, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Sporting Lisbon.
