In addition to the clear weaknesses in the attacking line, Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, recognizes the significance of reinforcing the midfield, considering the significant number of injuries his midfielders have suffered throughout the ongoing season.

Out of the five midfielders in the team, three have been unable to play for an extended period due to injuries. Christian Eriksen was absent for 16 games, Scott McTominay missed 15 games, and Donny van de Beek’s last appearance for the club was back in January.

In addition to the aforementioned injuries, there are further setbacks in Manchester United’s midfield. Marcel Sabitzer, who was signed on loan as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, has also been ruled out for the entire season. Furthermore, the team’s only prominent midfield enforcer, Casemiro, has faced suspension on three different occasions.

United need another quality midfielder

The need for a fresh and adaptable midfielder for Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window is evident. The Red Devils have been linked with two potential signings: Adrien Rabiot on a free transfer and a high-value move for Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

These additions would bring a new dynamic to the team’s midfield and provide valuable options for the squad.

In addition to Mason Mount, Manchester United is reportedly interested in another Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.

Previous reports suggested that Kovacic’s agents had been in contact with United, but recent rumors indicate that Manchester City may be the frontrunners in securing his signature.

However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the 20-time English league champions are not willing to give up easily and have also expressed their interest in signing the former Real Madrid player.

According to the report, Manchester United has joined the race to sign Mateo Kovacic in order to support manager Erik ten Hag after his successful debut season.

However, it is not just United and Manchester City who are interested in Kovacic, as even Bayern Munich has shown interest in the 29-year-old midfielder. The competition for Kovacic’s signature appears to be fierce, with multiple top clubs vying for his services.

United could hijack City’s Kovacic deal

Currently, there is still no agreement between Manchester City and Chelsea regarding Mateo Kovacic’s transfer, leaving an opportunity for Manchester United to potentially hijack the deal for the four-time Champions League winner.

It is evident why Kovacic is in high demand, as he possesses the ability to play in various midfield positions. Despite Chelsea’s challenging season, he managed to make 37 appearances, contributing with two goals and two assists. Transfermarkt values him at €40 million, and his contract with Chelsea is set to expire in 2024.

Given Kovacic’s skills, versatility, and winning mindset, acquiring him could be a smart move for any team, and Manchester United should consider competing with Manchester City for his signature.
