Manchester United decline a shock transfer offer from Barcelona for Harry Maguire
Last season, Maguire struggled to establish a run of form at Manchester United.
The England International was heavily criticised by fans at Old Trafford, with many asking for his dismissal.
Maguire has now piqued the eye of one of Europe’s most powerful clubs, Barcelona.
According to The Sun, the Spanish giants wanted to utilise Maguire as part of a deal that would also see Frenkie de Jong leave.
Manchester United have made no secret of their desire to sign De Jong this transfer window, but it looks that any deal involving Maguire will be impossible.
Erik ten Hag is said to be eager to work with Maguire when he joins the team this summer.
Despite his lack of form last season, Maguire has often demonstrated that he is a strong defender, particularly for his country.
Maguire seldom makes a mistake for England, so Ten Hag will be looking to revive this form when the Premier League season begins.
The Spanish club was interested in signing the England centre-back this summer.
But United were unwilling to let go of their £80 million defender, with new manager Erik Ten Hag eager to work with him.
Instead, De Jong is expected to join United in a cash transaction, with Barcelona holding out for £69 million.
Until recently, the two clubs were poles apart, but talks progressed over the weekend, and there is hope for a solution.
That will give Ten Hag a boost as he joins his new players at Carrington for the start of pre-season training.
