Manchester United could be forced to invest to revamp their starting XI with the club having only five guaranteed starters if Erik ten Hag is appointed as new manager
If Erik ten Hag is successful in his bid to become Manchester United’s next manager, he will have plenty to work on.
That’s probably an understatement. The Dutchman will almost certainly try to alter the club’s present transfer philosophy, which has seen them waste a lot of money in their frantic pursuit of championships.
Ten Hag has concentrated his efforts in Amsterdam with Ajax on developing the players at his disposal while also uncovering some young talents from the club’s academy – a conveyor belt of talent.
That is why many believe he is the ideal match for United, who have exhausted all options in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson period.
Ten Hag’s unconventional ways would now be a welcome relief after one of the club’s worst seasons in its history.
Regardless, there is no getting around the fact that United need to invest in order to rebuild their starting XI.
Ten Hag is expected to remain with his preferred 4-3-3 formation if he is given the job, and there are now only five sure starts, highlighting the amount of work that needs to be done.
David de Gea has re-established himself as the club’s number one goalkeeper, and Dean Henderson is poised to leave after losing his starting spot.
Although Manchester United are likely to sign a replacement for the Spaniard, he is expected to continue in charge.
Raphael Varane is the sole certain starter in defense, however Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw may be called upon again.
While Maguire continues to struggle, the French World Cup winner remains United’s best center defender.
It’s an area where United can improve, and given Varane’s quality, there’s no certainty Maguire will start or even be captain.
Ten Hag prefers offensive football, which is why Alex Telles could profit from his appointment while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot continue to compete for the right-back position.
With Bruno Fernandes expected to sign a new long-term contract, Ten Hag’s intentions will be centered around him if he is hired.
Since joining United from Sporting in January 2020, the playmaker has put up impressive stats, and his output will be crucial for the club moving forward.
Jadon Sancho is a dribbler and creative capable of feeding Manchester United’s frontline.
The former Borussia Dortmund man has had a rocky start at Old Trafford, but he is sure to improve from here on out.
Finally, assuming he remains at the club, Cristiano Ronaldo will be expected to lead the line for Manchester United – even if just for one more season.
The seasoned veteran still has plenty to offer at the highest level, and with United in need of a midfielder and some more defenders, a striker will not be at the top of their priority list.
Ronaldo will also want to leave United with a trophy before going on to whatever comes next…
