Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag makes Wout Weghorst claim after West Ham win

Erik ten Hag praised Wout Weghorst as “one of the top performers” during  Manchester United comeback win over West Ham United.

In the FA Cup fifth round match, United overcame a one-goal deficit and scored three goals in the final 13 minutes to secure a home quarter-final against Fulham on March 19th.

Weghorst played a key role in the victory, as he was involved in Nayef Aguerd’s own goal and his volley led to Alejandro Garnacho’s winning goal in the 90th minute.

Additionally, the Dutchman’s pressure forced Aguerd into an error, which allowed Fred to score the third goal and secure the win for United.

“I think he was one of the best players on the pitch,” Ten Hag said. “I think he was involved to see the corner, maybe he was in front when he came up together with Harry (Maguire) to force the own goal from the opponent.

“I think the goal from Garnacho he was pressing in switch of play and definitely in the third goal he gave a good press and forced the opponent to make a mistake where Fred scored.

“He understands positioning in and out of possession and he is doing a really good job for the team.”

Despite starting in all 13 games for United that he has been available for, Weghorst has only managed to score one goal for the club so far, which came in the League Cup semi-final first leg win against Nottingham Forest on January 25th.

However, Ten Hag is confident that Weghorst will eventually start making a significant contribution to United’s goals tally. Drawing on his experience with many players, Ten Hag referred to Marcus Rashford at the beginning of the season, who also didn’t score in every game but eventually found his form.

“But I know in my experience it will come. Once he has settled down, he has had a lot of games with us but not such a long period, when he is longer here, the routines will be there and when the first goal more will come.”
