Manchester United add three players to Europa League squad ahead of Barcelona encounter
Manchester United’s Europa League roster now includes January additions Jack Butland, Marcel Sabitzer, and Wout Weghorst.
The three newcomers are eligible to face Barcelona in the two-legged play-off later this month, with a trip to the Nou Camp on February 16 and a return match at Old Trafford on February 23.
Christian Eriksen remains on the United squad list despite suffering an ankle injury that could keep him out until May, and Donny van de Beek remains despite being ruled out for the season, but Martin Dubravka and Cristiano Ronaldo have been removed after leaving the club in January.
United have also removed Axel Tuanzebe from their squad, as the academy graduate has joined Stoke City on loan for the remainder of the season. Injured Phil Jones and fullback Brandon Williams remain without a spot on the roster.
United submitted a maximum 25-man squad to UEFA at the beginning of the season, thus necessitating the removal of three players to make room for the new signings.
The deadline for submitting a new squad list to UEFA was Thursday at 11:59 p.m., and the senior squad cannot be altered for the remainder of the season.
The B list of players, which includes those born on or after January 1, 2001 and trained by the club for two years since they turned 15, is subject to modification.
Butland joined the club on loan from Crystal Palace after Dubravka returned to Newcastle United, and he is likely to serve as the club’s third-string goalkeeper until the end of the season.
After Ronaldo’s contract was terminated before the transfer window opened, United loaned Burnley’s Weghorst to the club. Eriksen’s injury severity prompted Sabitzer’s transfer from Bayern Munich on the day of the transfer deadline.
