Manchester City set sights on Borussia Dortmund defender
Manchester City are reportedly following Raphael Guerreiro’s progress and could move the Portuguese to solve their left-back problem.
According to Fichajes, Raphael Guerreiro is one of the prominent names on the Manchester City shortlist for new left-backs. The Premier League champions are backed to move for the Portuguese.
Raphael Guerreiro, 27, has become a key member of the Borussia Dortmund side. Playing in his sixth Bundesliga season, the Portuguese full-back has been a consistent member of a team known to play attractive, attacking football.
The left-back has appeared in over 160 games for Dortmund in all competitions, scoring 32 goals and assisting on the same number of occasions.
From an attacking standpoint, he would be an excellent addition to any team that expects a lot from their full-backs, of which Manchester City is one.
Pep Guardiola has a problem with his left-back position. They don’t have a dedicated left-sided full-back, as Benjamin Mendy is still suspended following his arrest on suspicion of a crime.
Although Oleksandr Zinchenko is a viable option, the manager has largely ignored the Ukrainian in favor of deploying Joao Cancelo in his place.
Cancelo is a natural right-back, but he has also played as an inverted full-back from the left side under Guardiola.
As a result of this style, the full-backs’ output in terms of goals and assists has decreased slightly. As the manager is always looking for ways to improve his team, there is a need for a good attacking left-back.
Guerreiro’s name appears prominently on the club’s shortlist.
Guardiola’s all-attacking style would undoubtedly suit the Portuguese, and instead of using an inverted full-back, the manager can deploy a proper player with a great pedigree.
Manchester City spent the summer scouting attacking talents and paid £100 million for Jack Grealish. The rest of the game was spent chasing Harry Kane without success, with many pointing the finger at left-back.
The club has a shortage of players in the position, and with Mendy’s future uncertain, Guardiola will have to replace the expensive Frenchman.
A move will be contingent on Dortmund’s ability to hold on. Manchester City could make an offer in January or in the summer, as he will only have a year left on his contract.
A reasonable fee could be agreed upon during the winter window, but if the German side is doing well in the Bundesliga at the time, they will be reluctant to part ways.
