Manchester City Players Out of Contract in June with Guardiola looking to cut stars from the squad for 2023/24
Despite a stellar record, Manchester City are currently five points behind the Premier League’s top team (Arsenal).
As a result, some City fans may already be looking ahead to next season – here, we examine the Manchester City players whose contracts expire in June – who will Pep Guardiola be looking to release for 2023/24?
City has three players whose contracts will expire at the conclusion of the current season. One of them has appeared 16 times in the Premier League for City this season; would you be sad to see any of them leave?
Ilkay Gundogan
Since 2016, Ilkay Gundogan has been a member of Manchester City. However, now that he is 32, his time may be drawing to a close.
Pep Guardiola prefers his team to play an intense brand of pressing football; Gundogan can currently handle it, but for how much longer? Even though he is a talented midfielder, you can’t help but feel that City will seek out new talent.
Gundogan has made 173 appearances for City and scored 38 goals during his time there. This season, he has appeared in 16 league matches and scored twice.
Scott Carson
Scott Carson, a veteran goalkeeper, is another player that City is likely to release in the summer. At 37 years of age, it is safe to assume that he has passed his prime as a shot stopper.
Carson began working for City in 2021. Since then, he has primarily been used in cup competitions and as a backup in the Premier League, failing to unseat Ederson.
Carson has played for teams such as Leeds United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool over the course of his career. In addition, he has earned four England caps, the most recent of which was in 2011.
Benjamin Mendy
Benjamin Mendy is another City player who is likely to be released at the end of the season, although for very different reasons. Currently, he is awaiting a second trial for his alleged rape; he has been acquitted of six charges, with a seventh still pending.
His final game for City was a 1-0 loss to Spurs in August 2021. He has been unavailable for selection since then.
It would be unlikely for Mendy to remain a City player after the summer regardless of the outcome of the trial. Guardiola prefers his players to be well-drilled and cohesive with one another, and his absence from the team has been too long at this point.
