Manchester City goalkeeper confirms plans to depart this summer

Zack Steffen has stated in an interview that there will likely be a change in the goalkeeper department at Manchester City during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Steffen joined Manchester City in 2019 for a reported fee of $7 million and initially remained on loan with Columbus Crew until the MLS transfer window opened.

He was later sent on loan to Fortuna Düsseldorf for the 2019/20 season before joining Manchester City for the 2020/21 season.

Zack Steffen moved away from Manchester City in search of more regular playing time, and he has found it at Middlesbrough, where he has been their primary goalkeeper this season.

Despite his successful loan spell, Steffen’s future beyond this season remains uncertain, as his current deal with Middlesbrough is only temporary.

However, Steffen himself seems to have a plan for his future, which he discussed in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Zack Steffen has confirmed that he does not plan to return to Manchester City, as he is looking for more consistent playing time as a first-choice goalkeeper.

“I don’t think I’ll go back (to Manchester City),” said Steffen.

“No, I want to be playing. Although I had a great time at City and I love those guys, and obviously (it’s) an amazing club, I don’t really have any plans to go back.”

During the summer transfer window of last year, Manchester City acquired a new backup goalkeeper in the form of Stefan Ortega Moreno from Arminia Bielefeld, on a free transfer.

Moreno has primarily featured in domestic Cup games and has earned admiration from fans for his excellent reflexes, which complement his decent ball-handling abilities.
