Man Utd’s stance on Alejandro Garnacho talks after youngster rejects new contract
Despite Alejandro Garnacho’s 18-year-old rejection of Manchester United’s initial contract offer, club officials remain optimistic that a deal can be reached to extend his current deal.
In the last few months, Garnacho has emerged as one of United’s brightest young talents and has been able to force his way into the first-team by capitalizing on his opportunities to impress under Erik ten Hag this season.
The Argentine forward has contributed a goal and two assists in the Premier League since the beginning of the season, but his current contract expires in the summer of 2024, leaving the door open for a departure in the near future.
Manchester United recently initiated contract extension discussions with Garnacho, but their initial offer, which reportedly included a weekly salary of around £20,000, was reportedly rejected.
Garnacho’s decision to reject United has sparked rumors that he will soon leave Old Trafford, with Real Madrid and Juventus believed to be among the clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.
According to Jamie Jackson, the Red Devils remain optimistic that a long-term agreement can be reached with Garnacho and his representatives to keep him at the club.
According to reports, discussions thus far have been largely positive, with United eager for Garnacho to continue his development for at least the next few seasons.
Those in authority continue to hold out hope that he will commit his future to United by signing a new contract in order to deter other clubs from pursuing his services, indicating that an improved offer may soon be forthcoming.
Garnacho demonstrated his importance to United’s hopes of finishing in the top four by helping the Red Devils defeat Manchester City at Old Trafford in the second half on the weekend.
He wreaked havoc on Pep Guardiola’s side with his tricky running and set up Marcus Rashford for United’s third goal of the match with a delightful low cross that found the England international’s feet.
Paul Scholes was particularly impressed with Garnacho’s performance and indicated that he would like to see the 18-year-old striker sign a new contract by stating that he was superior to Antony against City and still has room to grow in the coming months.
“I think he’s been good every time I’ve seen him this season and I think he’s been a real threat,” Scholes told BT Sport. “I thought he probably should have come on before Antony, although Antony does have his strengths, don’t get me wrong, but this lad is direct.
“He doesn’t care, there’s no fear in a young player. He wants to score goals and he wants to make goals and he’s more than capable of doing it. You see against [Nathan] Ake, you fancy him.
“His first ball wasn’t great. He got away with that one a little bit. And then all he does is, he puts it into an area and thankfully Marcus is there. And the form Marcus is on, you expect him to score and he slides it in.”
