Man Utd’s remarkable XI under Luis Enrique as ‘private decision’ made on Solskjaer sack

Manchester United could be blessed with a new-look lineup if Luis Enrique is appointed before the January transfer window closes.

The current Spain manager is reportedly on the Red Devils’ radar, amid reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fate has been sealed following private talks.

And according to Express Sport, here is how United might line up under the Spaniard:

Goalkeeper: De Gea

Following a power struggle between the posts last season, David De Gea has been firmly reinstated as Manchester United’s number one this season.

Back-up Dean Henderson’s game time has decreased as a result, but the Spaniard’s performances alone make it a necessary evil.

As a 45-cap Spanish international, there’s no doubt who Enrique’s preferred goalkeeper would be if he were appointed manager.

Having fallen behind Unai Simon in the national team pecking order, he may still need to find another gear to keep the manager’s faith in the long run.

Defence: Dest, Maguire, Varane, Shaw

Enrique’s first move in the transfer market could be to find a right-back, with an attacking replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka a long-term priority for United.

United could make a move for American youngster Sergino Dest by leveraging his positive relationship and solid contacts at former club Barcelona.

So far this season, the 21-year-old has three assists in La Liga while keeping experienced campaigner Sergi Roberto out of the starting lineup.

The Red Devils have an experienced and solid backline in Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw that should be able to compete with any in the Premier League.

Midfield: Fernandes, De Jong, Olmo

With the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred leaving a lot to be desired this season, United may opt for a middle-of-the-park strengthening strategy.

El Chiringuito reported this week that Barcelona are willing to sell Frenkie de Jong for the right price, and the club would be wise to do so given his ability to take the ball in tight spaces.

Dani Olmo, a gifted RB Leipzig midfielder who had a brief overlap with Enrique at Barcelona, has also been linked to several top clubs ahead of the January window, though his release clause is thought to be in excess of £60 million.

While Paul Pogba’s contract dispute may soon force him out of the picture, Bruno Fernandes remains a key member of United’s squad and will almost certainly remain so under Enrique.

Attack: Rashford, Ronaldo, Greenwood

Attack is one area of the pitch that, without a doubt, requires little tinkering.

Given United’s plethora of talent, including the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo, Enrique would be spoiled for choice if he preferred a front three.

Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have both been in good form this season, but the likes of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and Amad Diallo could be knocking on the door by the time Enrique takes over.
