Man Utd to rip big from the UEFA’s new Champions League plan amid top 4 tumble
Manchester United has received a boost in terms of Champions League qualification as UEFA announced revised plans for the 2024/25 season and beyond.
The league has already been expanded from 32 to 36 teams, but UEFA has now disclosed that two of those extra spots would not be based on the club co-efficient rating.
The Red Devils and Roma would be the clubs to benefit from that method in the current season, but UEFA has decided against it, with some teams and fans questioning the sports integrity.
As a result, a new path has been designed. The best collective performance of clubs in Europe (by country) will now be evaluated (total number of co-efficient points divided by the number of participating clubs).
Two associations will gain from an additional Champions League spot as a result of this. This word, for example, would go to England and the Netherlands. The fifth-placed Premier League team will be given a place in the Champions League.
With the new structure, United would still miss out on the competition based on their results this season, but they would gain in the long run if they missed out on the top four.
Under new manager Erik ten Hag, United will go through a time of transition, and qualifying for the Champions League may become more difficult in the future due to increased competition in the Premier League.
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have become more difficult opponents in the last year, while Newcastle United’s big-money Saudi-led takeover might put them in the mix in the future.
The United fans would prefer to compete for trophies with a regular top-four spot, but an additional Champions League spot could be critical for the 2024/25 season and beyond.
If European clubs continue to perform and reach the last stages of international competitions, the Premier League may nearly guarantee a fifth Champions League spot in the future.
