Man Utd tipped to sell Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire in shock major transfer clear-out this summer
Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Manchester United could sell at least two defenders during the summer transfer window.
Following another terrible season, the Red Devils are poised to undertake a total roster rebuild.
And their back line is an area where they must improve.
Man United had their worst defensive season since 1978-79, surrendering 57 Premier League goals in 2021-22. (63).
As a result, Ferdinand feels that the club’s four major center-backs, including Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, could be sold by new manager Erik ten Hag.
When speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube show, the United legend said: “I’ll be interested to see what Ten Hag does in that area.
“We’re talking about the young lad, Timber, at Ajax, a small centre-half.
“I’ll be interested to see what happens with Varane, Lindelof and Maguire, Bailly as well, I think one or two of those will go.”
The quartet cost the Red Devils roughly £175 million in total, yet none of them have performed consistently.
During his first season at Old Trafford, Ferdinand said Varane looked like a “rabbit in headlights.”
Man United have previously been linked with a number of players who may fill the post, including Lisandro Martinez, who would be an alternative to Jurrien Timber, who reportedly turned down a move last week.
Another possibility is Villarreal’s Pau Torres, who has a £51 million release clause that the club has contemplated activating.
The Red Devils are also interested in Juventus center-back Matthijs de Ligt, although they will face heavy competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea for his signature.
