Man Utd sent warning over ‘spectacular’ wonderkid who could leave the club in January

Man Utd sent warning over ‘spectacular’ wonderkid who could leave the club in January

Manchester United may lose young star Facundo Pellistri during the January transfer window, United has been warned.

Pellistri has been a member of the Red Devils since 2020, when he arrived from Uruguayan club Penarol.

However, he has not yet played a competitive match for United at the senior level and has been limited to U23 action.

He spent last season and the six months prior to the end of the 2020/21 season on loan with La Liga club Alaves.

Before Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Fulham, Pellistri had been included in every matchday squad since the 6-1 loss to Manchester City on October 2. Pellistri has remained at Old Trafford this season. Nonetheless, he has not been given a chance from the bench.

Despite this, the 20-year-old was included in Uruguay’s final World Cup squad of 26 players for Qatar.

He could therefore play alongside players such as Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez, and former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani.

And, speaking prior to the tournament, the player’s agent, Eduardo Lasalvia, believes a strong performance at the World Cup will allow Pellistri to leave Old Trafford in the near future.

Pellistri could be set for Man Utd departure

Lasalvia stated (quotes via Daily Mirror): “I think that, with a good World Cup, as we think he will have, his departure is imminent.”

Despite his lack of playing time, Pellistri has impressed his teammates on the national squad.

The 20-year-old has has seven senior-level caps for his country and played 45 minutes in September’s 1-0 loss to Iran.

In the same month, Barcelona and Uruguay central defender Ronald Araujo lauded Pellistri’s dedication.

He told El Pais (quotes via Somos Invictos): “I think Facundo Pellistri surprised me quite a bit. Especially since he had not been playing. And more because of the level that he gave in the national team, that he was spectacular.

“Besides, we understood each other very well on the right wing. Facundo was the one that surprised me the most, yes.”

Despite the claims made by Pellistri’s agency, the player remains under contract with Manchester United until 2025. Erik ten Hag may therefore wish to keep the teenager at Old Trafford and provide him with additional opportunity.

A successful showing at the World Cup would assist Pellistri in achieving this objective. Nonetheless, if United are planning to sell the player, strong performances in the World Cup would not hurt his chances of leaving.
