Man Utd quickly make decision on appealing Casemiro’s red card ahead of four-game ban
Manchester United have made the decision to not contest Casemiro’s expulsion from the match against Southampton, which means he will be absent from their upcoming four games.
During the game, the Brazilian midfielder was given a straight red card by referee Anthony Taylor for a tackle on Carlos Alcaraz that was initially deemed a yellow card offence.
However, after VAR Andre Marriner reviewed the incident, the card was upgraded to a red one.
This is Casemiro’s second sending off in three Premier League games and will have a significant impact on Manchester United’s attempts to improve their recent poor form.
Despite Casemiro’s suspension, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag did not have any issue with the referee’s decision and even shook his hand after the game.
The club has also confirmed that they will not be appealing the suspension. Casemiro will now miss several upcoming matches including the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham, the Premier League games against Newcastle and Brentford, and the Everton clash.
This will be the Brazilian midfielder’s eighth suspension since the start of the year. As he left the pitch, Casemiro was comforted by teammates Antony and Lisandro Martinez, as well as Southampton’s Che Adams.
He also shared an embrace with the player he had tackled, Carlos Alcaraz. Despite the incident, Manchester United managed to hold on for a point in a thrilling match, but goalkeeper David de Gea expressed sympathy for Casemiro, saying he had been “unlucky.”
“I think Casemiro was unlucky. He tried to touch the ball and his foot came up high. I think the referees need to show more consistency. Sometimes they show a red card and sometimes they don’t,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s going to be tough, he’s a big player. We will miss him for four games but we have a big squad. We have players coming from the bench who do well. We will keep working hard.
“It should be a game to win today but the game changed when we lost a man in the team. We tried our best to score but it was difficult. They had some chances but in the end we showed good team spirit. We have to take the point and keep going.”
Manchester United’s draw with Southampton has left them in third place in the Premier League, and with their hopes of competing for the title all but gone, according to manager Erik ten Hag.
They are currently 16 points behind league leaders Arsenal but have a comfortable eight-point lead over fifth-placed Liverpool, securing their position in the top four.
Despite his suspension in domestic competition, Casemiro will still be eligible to play in the Europa League, with the upcoming second leg against Real Betis.
However, in Casemiro’s absence, players such as Marcel Sabitzer, Fred, and Scott McTominay will be vying for a starting spot in domestic competitions.
