Man Utd may have to pay £122m to land priority Erik ten Hag signing Mason Mount

Manchester United might be required to pay approximately £122 million in order to acquire Mason Mount for their team at Old Trafford in the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to reports, Erik ten Hag is keen on including the Chelsea playmaker in his squad and is looking to secure his services in the next few weeks.

Mount has recently become a top priority for the Red Devils, who have been strongly linked with signing at least one new midfielder before the start of the new Premier League season in August.

As things currently stand, Mason Mount’s contract with Chelsea will expire in the summer of 2024. This leaves Chelsea with a dilemma of whether to sell him this summer or risk losing him on a free transfer next year. Behind closed doors, there have been discussions about the possibility of extending his contract. However, it appears that these talks have reached a stalemate, with neither party willing to compromise.

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United is looking to take advantage of this situation and has initiated discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential summer transfer for Mount. Internal discussions within Manchester United about the structure of an offer have been ongoing for some time. It is believed that Mount himself is open to the idea of leaving Stamford Bridge to seek a new challenge with Manchester United.

According to reports, Chelsea has set a price tag of £70 million for Mason Mount. However, if Manchester United were to pursue a deal to bring him to their club, the overall cost could exceed £120 million.

This is due to the significant wages that would be necessary to secure his services. Recent rumors indicate that Mount desires a salary comparable to that of his Chelsea teammate Reece James. James signed a new six-year contract in September, reported to be worth approximately £250,000 per week.

It appears that if Manchester United is willing to meet Chelsea’s asking price of £70 million and offer Mason Mount a wage package similar to Reece James, around £200,000 per week, there is a possibility of Mount joining United. In such a scenario, if Mount signs a five-year contract with United, the total cost of the deal would amount to approximately £122 million, including the transfer fee.

However, the realization of this proposed move for Mount to Manchester United remains uncertain. It ultimately depends on whether the Red Devils can come to an agreement on the financial terms with the player, especially considering that Mount is entering the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Only time will tell if the transfer materializes.

Gary Neville, a legendary figure at Manchester United, has expressed his belief that Mason Mount would be a smart addition to his former club. Neville’s reasoning is based on Mount’s potential to thrive under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, who has a reputation for nurturing technically gifted players.

Ten Hag’s coaching style and approach make him well-suited to helping Mount unlock his full potential at Old Trafford. Neville sees Mount’s potential acquisition as a strategic move that could benefit Manchester United.

“Mason Mount is a coach’s player,” Neville told Sky Sports. “I think that is the best way to describe him and there have been many I have seen in my lifetime in football where they get more respect from the coaching staff for what they do than they do from the fans that are watching them.

“I’m not surprised Mason Mount is a target for Manchester United. I don’t think it would be a priority here, but he [Ten Hag] does want midfield players. You think about Dutch coaches, they want to dominate possession, he [Ten Hag] wants [Frenkie] de Jong, he wants players who can handle the ball.

“He loves [Christian] Eriksen, he loves [Marcel] Sabitzer, he loves [Bruno] Fernandes. He’s left Fred and [Scott] McTominay out of the team more often than not because he loves more technical players and Mason Mount is a technical player who is available.”
