Man Utd handed injury setback as Erik ten Hag suffers international break blow

Martin Dubravka’s decision to withdraw from international duty with Slovakia presents  Manchester United  with a new injury issue.

This summer, the 33-year-old goalkeeper joined Manchester United from Newcastle in a £2 million loan deal that might become permanent for £6 million depending on the number of appearances he makes this season.

He has yet to make his debut for Erik ten Hag’s squad and was curiously omitted from last week’s Europa League squad that defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0.

Dubravka was able to rejoin his international teammates earlier this week, though it is unknown whether his absence was due to injury.

However, his stay with the Slovakia squad was brief as he sustained an injury during training and will return to United’s Carrington base for further evaluation.

Dubravka started all three of his country’s Euro 2020 matches last summer, but his latest injury knocks him out of Thursday’s and Sunday’s Nations League matches against Azerbaijan and Belarus.

It might also leave Ten Hag without choices between the posts by the time United travel to local rivals and defending Premier League winners Manchester City following the conclusion of the international break.

David de Gea started against Sheriff, with Tom Heaton as his veteran backup on the bench. In Dubravka’s absence, 18-year-old Radek Vitek was also added to the team.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams, and Facundo Pellistri are Ten Hag’s other injury concerns.

After suffering a thigh injury during the 3-1 victory over Arsenal in early September, Rashford might return for the Manchester derby.

The status of fellow attacker Martial remains questionable as he continues to battle an Achilles injury that has kept him in the physio room since August.

Winger Pellistri is also recovering from a foot injury, while Van de Beek is anticipated to recover from a knock by the time the Premier League resumes in one week, with Manchester United travelling to the Etihad in the first of two games on Sunday, October 2.

The Red Devils enter their match versus City in excellent form, having won their last four domestic games before to the postponement of their games against Crystal Palace and Leeds due to the death of the Queen.

In their first two league games, Ten Hag’s squad was defeated 2-1 by Brighton and hammered 4-0 by Brentford. This winning streak represents a huge turnaround.

United avenged their 1-0 home setback to Real Sociedad by claiming their first Europa League points with a victory over Sheriff.
