Man Utd decides on firing Solskjaer after Europa League final defeat.

Manchester United have resolved to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager, despite a depressing disappointment to Villarreal in the Europa League final.

The UK Telegraph reports that the executive vice-chairman of the club, Ed Woodward, will award the Norwegian a new three-year contract.

Solskjaer succeeded Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in December 2018 transitorily basis.

In March 2019, he was named on a full-time basis on a three-year deal, following a run of good outcomes.

With the 48-year-old having one year left on the current deal, United have decided to stretch his stay, despite his failure to win any silverware during his time.

Solskjaer’s men had the opportunity to break that duck but lost to Villarreal 11-10 on penalties in Gdansk.

The report also alleges that United are willing to back Solskjaer by bringing in up to four new arrivals this summer.

Solskjaer is perceived to be prioritizing a contract for Jadon Sancho, who United slipped to sign from Borussia Dortmund last year, as well as a new central defender.

Speaking after United’s loss on penalties in the Europa League final, Solskjaer made it apparent that he is keen to reinforce his squad ahead of the next campaign.

“We’ve probably done as well as anyone could imagine,’ said Solskjaer.
‘We need to do better and work harder, be cleverer, but two or three players [are needed] to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether.

“It’s important for us to go even further. I’m sure our contenders or challengers will also want to improve so we want to improve as much as we can.”

Solskjaer also denied the idea that United have produced a successful season following their defeat to Villarreal.

“We need to get better, simple as,’ said the United manager.

“We’ve done really well this season to come through a difficult start and no pre-season, losing three of the first six games.

“We pushed in the league and got closer to the top than we thought at that point. And we got to a final but you need to win these finals to make it a good season.”

The Spaniard has not saved a penalty for the Red Devils since the denial of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in the 2016 FA Cup semi-final, while Henderson impeded Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus from 12 yards while on loan at Sheffield United last season. Henderson also stopped penalties in the 2019 Under-21 European Championship and the 2018 League One Play-off final.
