Man Utd chief John Murtough ‘boards flight’ to seal 4th summer signing

According to reports,  Manchester United football director John Murtough is traveling to meet Adrien Rabiot’s mother and agent Veronique in order to finalize the club’s fourth summer signing.

The Red Devils are said to have agreed a fee of £15 million with Juventus for the Frenchman, and a deal is expected to be completed soon.

However, the final hurdle appears to be reaching personal terms with the player and Veronique Rabiot, a notoriously difficult negotiator.

She has been at the center of several public squabbles, including one with PSG, which sold the midfielder to Juventus in 2019.

According to The Telegraph, Murtough is now on his way to secure United’s fourth summer signing after Tyrell Malaca, Lisandro Martinez, and Christian Eriksen.

Erik ten Hag is said to have personally backed a deal for Rabiot, who is said to be open to the move.

The Dutchman simply needs reinforcements after being dealt a harsh reality check on Sunday when Brighton won all three points at Old Trafford.

The Seagulls won their first game of the season 2-1, heaping misery on the new United manager, who now realizes the magnitude of the task at hand.

Ten Hag is said to have told Rabiot that he wants him to join his United project before a possible transfer.

Rabiot has expressed a desire to play on English soil, having previously been linked with moves to Everton and Arsenal.

United have abandoned their pursuit of Bologna forward Marko Arnautovic, despite making an opening bid of £7.2 million.

The club’s interest in the Austrian international drew widespread criticism, prompting United to back out of the deal.

Following the disappointing performance at Brighton, Ten Hag confirmed that new signings were very much on the agenda.

“We need more players. We have multiple targets,” he said. “We are working on it. But we should have done better today with this team.

“It’s all about results. We all know that we are in a process. There are still many things that need to be improved. We have to learn from this and then continue.”

United are also looking for more attacking reinforcements, with Cody Gakpo being one of the names of interest.

The Red Devils had been in talks with Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko before RB Leipzig beat them to the highly rated Slovenian.

With Frenkie de Jong still seemingly out of reach, the club is now looking into alternative midfield targets.
