Man Utd are expecting swap deal can unravel an 11-year problem for Erik ten Hag straight away

According to reports,  Manchester United  and Barcelona are negotiating a swap deal that would send Sergino Dest to Old Trafford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the opposite direction.

Erik ten Hag is eager to add to his squad before the transfer window closes on Thursday. The club is seeking a new right back.

And with regard to Dest, it appears that the Red Devils are hoping he can solve a problem that has plagued the club since the retirement of Gary Neville in 2011.

Thus far, Manchester United has had a successful transfer window.

In an effort to secure a top-four finish, they have also completed deals for Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro, in addition to the £84 million deal for Antony.

Now, Dest may be up next. The Red Devils are in negotiations with Barcelona to acquire the United States international, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax earlier in their respective careers.

Therefore, United are essentially hoping to solve a 12-year-old issue immediately.

Since Neville’s retirement, the club has not possessed a truly world-class right back who has been able to make the position their own.

Once upon a time, it appeared that Rafael Da Silva was the solution.

Rafael was always the more talented sibling, despite Fabio’s participation in the Champions League final loss to Barcelona in 2011.

During Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season with the club, he made 28 Premier League appearances and scored three goals as the club reclaimed the championship from Manchester City.

However, things changed when David Moyes and Louis van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford simultaneously.

Despite Ferguson’s work in developing the Brazil international into one of the best full-backs in the Premier League, neither manager appeared to appreciate Rafael.

In September 2020, Rafael disclosed that he had been warned that Van Gaal would dislike him.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: “When they said Van Gaal was the manager, a lot of friends called me. I could not believe it, as a lot of people told me he does not like Brazilians (because of their style of play).

“They told me, ‘The first thing he is going to do is take you out.’

“Actually, it was the second thing because on the first day, he did not speak to me.

“On the second day, he said, ‘You can leave.’ I had not even trained and he said that. I could not believe it… He did not explain why.

“He said, ‘You will not play this season, I am not going to use you, if you want to leave, you leave.’

“I said, ‘OK.’ I still tried to battle for my place. I stayed one year with him. It was so, so hard. He is one of the worst people I have worked with.”

After selling Rafael to Lyon during the 2015 summer transfer window, Van Gaal decided to sign Matteo Darmian.

The Italy international did well at Parma and Inter Milan after leaving Manchester United, but he never made the grade.

Recently, Gary Neville included him on his list of the club’s nine worst signings in the past decade.

Towards the end of his tenure with the club, Antonio Valencia played as a right-back.

However, the Ecuadorian will forever be remembered as a winger, not a full-back, as United’s lack of depth necessitated the use of the veteran in that position.

Jose Mourinho acquired Diogo Dalot in 2018 and, upon assuming his position, designated him as Neville’s successor.

“Everybody knows that he has fantastic potential,” Mourinho told MUTV at the time of the Portugal international’s arrival.

“I don’t want to compare, especially not the number of titles but he is probably the same age as Gary Neville when he came into the first team.

“Probably he can follow Neville in this dynamic of more than 10 years as United’s right-back, with amazing conditions to improve, because as I was saying he’s 19 years old.”

Dalot is currently United’s first-choice defender, but he still has much to learn before he can be considered an indispensable member of Ten Hag’s squad.

In 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer authorized a £50 million transfer for Crystal Palace’s Wan-Bissaka.

The 24-year-old regressed alarmingly last season and hasn’t been able to recover since. During his first two seasons, he showed significant growth.

United has not had a right-back who excels at both ends of the field and has a significant impact since Neville.

With Dest, it appears the Red Devils are hoping for a different outcome.
