Man United star midfielder explains what went wrong with Man Utd in draw against Spurs
After a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen stated that his team lost energy and control in the second half, which allowed Tottenham Hotspur to make a comeback. The match ended with both teams sharing the points.
He told BT Sport (via Manchester Evening News): “I think we missed the last percentage of really taking the game and finishing it off.
“I think we took a bit of the gas off and that was our problem.
“I think it’s been that for a few games where we are sharp and coming ahead and [haven’t] kept it going. We lost a bit of energy, a bit of control and they got belief and it went the other way.
“That’s how it goes normally. When you are 2-0 down, anything can change quickly. We didn’t have the control to finish them off and don’t give them the chance to score the first goal, that gave belief.”
Christian Eriksen was substituted at the wrong time
Erik ten Hag has been highly effective in making substitutions for Manchester United this season. His ability to bring on players at the right time has often been the catalyst for many of the team’s victories.
Unfortunately, in yesterday’s match, the substitutions made by Erik ten Hag ended up being detrimental to Manchester United’s performance. The midfield lost its balance when Fred replaced Eriksen in the 60th minute.
Eriksen had a strong performance, making two key passes and finishing the game with a passing accuracy of 91%, while Fred struggled with just a 71% passing accuracy and losing the ball nine times during his cameo appearance – more than Eriksen did in his entire 60-minute performance where he lost the ball eight times.
Ten Hag’s decision to substitute Eriksen may have been due to the Dane’s recent three-month injury layoff, as he did not want to risk him. However, Eriksen is an important player for United and needs to prove to Ten Hag that he can last for longer periods in crucial games.
