Man United fans have given up on Premier League title already…after reports of David de Gea ‘ new Man Utd deal’
DAVID DE GEA is close to finalizing a new contract, although certain Manchester United fans have lost hope in winning the title upon learning this information.
The current agreement of the 32-year-old goalkeeper, which pays him £375,000 per week, expires in June.
Despite concerns from David De Gea’s camp about his future as the first-choice goalkeeper next season, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains confident that the Spanish stopper will extend his 12-year stay at Old Trafford by signing a contract extension.
The Sun has now revealed that De Gea could be enticed with the prospect of a lucrative testimonial if he agrees to a reduction in salary.
The club has offered a new contract that would entail a significant decrease of nearly 50 percent in his current basic salary. While Ten Hag publicly supports De Gea, reservations persist within the player’s camp regarding his role as the number one goalkeeper in the upcoming season.
David De Gea, who was awarded the Premier League’s Golden Glove this season, joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
Due to the pandemic, plans for a testimonial year to acknowledge his long service were delayed. Currently in his second decade at the club, United aims to honor his loyalty if he commits to a new contract in the coming weeks.
According to the Daily Mail, it is claimed that De Gea has “agreed terms” to extend his stay and is awaiting approval from the Red Devils’ management.
However, it has been previously reported that his status as the number one goalkeeper is no longer guaranteed, as manager Erik ten Hag has refrained from providing that assurance for the upcoming season.
Erik ten Hag’s preferred playing style requires a goalkeeper who is adept at playing the ball out from the back, and as a result, he has been linked with several other goalkeepers, including Porto’s Diogo Costa.
Moreover, David De Gea’s performance in the FA Cup Final loss to Manchester City has raised concerns and could have consequences for his position. Specifically, he faced criticism for both of Ilkay Gundogan’s goals at Wembley.
Consequently, some supporters have lost confidence in De Gea, and their skepticism is evident in their reactions on Twitter to the news of his imminent contract extension.
One supporter tweeted: “Pathetic. Madrid and Barca are letting players who are useful go, whilst we hanging onto a GK who can’t pass, can’t command his box, wets himself when a cross comes in and his shot stopping isn’t as good as it was 5 years ago.”
Another wrote: “I love de gea he has done a fantastic job the past 12 years but we need a keeper who will move out into the box instead of being rooted to the goal line. His distribution is woefully bad and the mistakes are very costly. We need a keeper who will command the entire box.”
A fellow fan commented: “He’s washed. The first goal he just watched it go by. Seen it too many times this season, get him out he’s got too comfy with his starting role week in and week out.”
As another tweeted: “Real Madrid just let go of Benzema, Hazard and Asensio this week and we’re keeping a hold of a guy who’s cost us so many trophies in the last 12 years to be on the bench even Spurs are letting go of Lloris.”
