Man United blow as first-team star’s season could be over, metal bolts in his leg removed following surgery
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw may miss the remainder of the season due to injury, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), since his rehabilitation from surgery is taking far longer than expected.
The left-back underwent surgery this week to have the metal bolts in his leg removed, which were originally implanted after he injured his leg while playing for the Red Devils in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Shaw suffered a double fracture of the leg as a result of a clumsy tackle from Hector Moreno, causing him to miss a total of 11 months of action.
The Englishman needed a long time to heal and return to the team, becoming a regular only in the 2018-19 season.
Since returning from that horrific injury, the 26-year-old has firmly established himself as the Red Devils’ first option at left-back, pushing out players like Brandon Williams and Alex Telles.
Despite suffering the fracture in 2015, Shaw is still feeling the consequences of that heinous tackle.
He previously had discomfort when representing England during the international break, and it happened again during United’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City, causing interim manager Ralf Rangnick to replace the defender.
Although the head coach anticipated to see his left-back return in a couple of weeks after undergoing surgery to remove the metal bolts in his leg, the operation is claimed to be taking longer to recover from than envisaged.
The former Southampton player may now miss the rest of the season.
Shaw had incredible grit and tenacity in returning to the starting lineup after suffering the injury, demonstrating the player’s determination to conquer his hurdles.
Despite the fact that it took him a couple of seasons to re-establish himself, the England international demonstrated to others that he was capable of resuming his career.
Despite his earlier injuries, the former Saints man has played under various managers during his time in Manchester, and such is his talent and value to the team that he has been first-choice for all of the head coaches.
After a long period at the top, it appears that the injury has slowed his progress once more.
With United striving to finish in the top four this season, Shaw’s injury will be a big setback for the club as they attempt to finish strong.
Rangnick has Telles to fall back on at left back, but the Brazilian has the same intensity and serenity beneath the ball that Shaw does.
