Man City’s Champions League woes exacerbated by a major injury setback in the midst of the Liverpool title race
In the 2022 Champions League final, Liverpool will meet Real Madrid.
Last night, Los Blancos staged one of the greatest European comebacks in history to humiliate Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.
After trailing in stoppage time, Madrid scored two goals in as many stoppage minutes through Rodrygo to square the semi-final 5-5 on aggregate and force extra time.
Then Karim Benzema came up to score another important penalty spot goal, securing Madrid’s position against the Reds in Paris on Saturday 28 May.
It’s a rematch of the 2018 final, in which Jurgen Klopp’s men were defeated 3-1 by the Spanish giants Kyiv.
It is, indeed, an opportunity to make amends for that defeat.
By the time they meet again at the Stade de France, Liverpool will be looking to complete an unprecedented quadruple.
With four games remaining, the Reds are only one point behind Manchester City in the Premier League.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting finale to the Premier League season, with an FA Cup final versus Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday 14 May to look forward to.
The title fight is set to go down to the wire, and small margins might make or break the campaign.
And City’s next injury setback came when Kyle Walker hobbled off against Real Madrid.
The defender had missed the previous five games before being brought back into Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup.
Walker, on the other hand, could only survive 71 minutes before walking off in excruciating discomfort.
City will now be relying on the key right-back for the final four Premier League games.
The Etihad Stadium club is also without John Stones, while Aymeric Laporte appeared to be laboring towards the end of the Real Madrid defeat – presumably with cramp.
