Man City transfer news deadline day updates as window shuts

Today is the transfer deadline, and it appears Manchester City will be relatively active.

Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez, Stefan Ortega, and Sergio Gomez were all signed well in advance of the season.

Despite injuries to Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake, and Luke Mbete, the Blues are close to securing Manuel Akanji, a central defender from Borussia Dortmund, as a late addition to their roster. Akanji will provide the Blues with much-needed depth.

Even though Bernardo Silva will almost definitely remain at the Etihad despite his wish to go, other departures are possible.

Several of the club’s bright youth have been linked with permanent moves on the final day of the transfer market, and they might complete their moves before 11 p.m.

Guardiola reiterates Man City’s position on irreplaceable Bernardo Silva

Pep Guardiola insists Bernardo Silva will remain at Manchester City this week, despite Barcelona’s ongoing interest, as he deems the Portuguese player essential.

Guardiola was effusive in his praise of the midfielder after Bernardo scored the first goal in City’s brilliant second-half comeback against Crystal Palace on Saturday, and then played a key role in the equalizing goal scored by Erling Haaland.

When asked about Julian Alvarez’s impact off the bench, Guardiola promptly praised Bernardo before confirming his pre-match comments that the no.20 will remain at City beyond Thursday’s transfer window deadline – even though Barcelona have not given up hope of buying him.

“I was clear yesterday [Friday]. He’s going to stay,” Guardiola said. “I had the feeling the games that we expect the teams to defend so deep because the manager said that. Julian, Gundo and Erling would have to be so important because we had the feeling of the tempo of the goal. Phil [Foden] as well has this talent. I’m happy that today Bernardo become a winning player.

“All the highlights will be for Erling but we cannot forget what Bernardo has done today. Scoring the goal and creating on the right side in the second half. Incredible weapons with Kevin [De Bruyne] and the second goal come from him too. What I’m amazed about Bernardo is the fact that when the game is going wrong he makes steps forward. He loves to play in the games like this situation.

“A few players make a step backwards and he makes a step forward. That’s why Bernardo is irreplaceable with many things for us. He’s so important for us Bernardo, can play in three, four or five positions. It’s not just what he is on the pitch, it’s off the pitch, the happiness in the locker room. I want him so much.”

City attempting to sign Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji

Manchester City intends to make Dortmund central defender Manuel Akanji its sixth significant summer acquisition.

Txiki Begiristain has already added five new players to the City roster, including Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez, and Stefan Ortega. In addition, the recruitment team will aim to add Akanji to their central defenders.

Pep Guardiola is already facing another month without Aymeric Laporte due to injury, and Nathan Ake sustained a groin problem against Newcastle.

The Athletic was the first to report that Akanji is available at a reduced fee of approximately £15 million, and City hopes to grasp the opportunity to bolster its central-defensive options.

Akanji has been at Dortmund for the past four years after signing from Basel, and he made 36 appearances for them last year. Dortmund is one of City’s Champions League opponents in the group stage this season.

However, he is in the final year of his contract with the club, and it is believed that Dortmund would prefer to receive a transfer fee for him now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
