Man City receive a boost over cheap Erling Haaland alternative Pep Guardiola wants to sign

Pep Guardiola’s chase of his next Manchester City striker has taken a fresh twist as Danny Ings has appeared as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

Ings is entering the final 12 months of his deal at Southampton and the South Coast side could look to cash in on the England international this summer.

The 28-year-old would be left to leave for free next year and looks doubtful to sign a new deal with the club.

Man City manager Guardiola is desperate to sign a new striker after seeing long-serving star Sergio Aguero depart to Barcelona on a free transfer.

However, he openly played down the speculations of signing one due to the premium prices of goal-scorers available on the market.

The Premier League champions are one of several clubs who have been linked with Dortmund striker Haaland, whose father Alf Inge played for the club.

But the Bundesliga club are understood to want at least £150million before they agree to sell another star player after letting Jadon Sancho to join Manchester United.

Haaland has scored a tremendous 57 goals in 59 appearances for Dortmund and is expected to remain at the German club for at least another year, notwithstanding interest from City, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Former Liverpool forward Ings, who has scored 46 times in 100 appearances for Southampton, is now recognized as an alternative to Haaland.

TalkSPORT have reported that Ings is holding out for one of City or United to approach him this summer, but that no inquiry for the player has been made.

Tottenham are also understood to be keeping tabs on Ings, but it is likely that he would struggle for game time ahead of Harry Kane.

The ex-Burnley player would likely come cheap due to his contract situation, despite Southampton reportedly patting a £30m price tag on his head last summer.

City’s squad shared around the goals last season, despite winning the league by 12 points, and Guardiola is keen for one player to appear as a prolific scorer.

Ilkay Gundogan’s 17 goals in all competitions made him their highest marksman, while Phil Foden managed 16.

Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus each registered 14 strikes.

Guardiola, who is a fan of Ings, is imperative to sign someone who can succeed Aguero’s goal-scoring ability but knows that those players are difficult to sign.

“I’d love to have a guy score 50 goals [in a season], honestly I would love it,” Guardiola said at the end of last season.

“At the same time I don’t like putting all the pressure on one player. Even [when I coached] at Barcelona, [Lionel] Messi scored every season 50 goals.

“In the first season, I had Thierry Henry who scored a lot, Samuel Eto’o scored a lot – what a striker.

“When you are just to win titles, especially the Premier League with one guy you are not going to win the Premier League. The statistics speak for themselves.

“You need three guys [to score] more than 12-15 goals to arrive to be competitors. When you have a guy who can score 25-30 it helps a lot, honestly.

“We try for the way we play everyone being involved to score goals. Raheem scores, Riyad especially, Gundogan especially this season, Phil Foden has qualities in front of goal, Sergio and Gabriel.

“As much players we have with this quality, the much better we’ll be.”
