Man City identifies Chelsea-linked Raheem Sterling’s replacement in Man Utd hijack
If Raheem Sterling joins Chelsea, Manchester City are allegedly interested in signing Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry.
Manchester United is also said to be interested, although City may be a more appealing option for the Germany star.
Gnabry’s contract at Bayern Munich expires in less than a year.
He has turned down all renewal offers and will be sold if he does not sign a new contract.
Chelsea are getting closer to signing Sterling, who is also in the final year of his contract with the club. And if he does depart, City will look to replace him.
According to The Sun, if Sterling transfers to Stamford Bridge, Gnabry will be at the top of Pep Guardiola’s wishlist.
Due to his contract situation, Bayern would be willing to sell the former Arsenal ace for £35 million.
Gnabry’s position is also being monitored by United. However, City’s involvement could be a major stumbling block in their efforts to close a transaction.
City will compete in the Champions League next season, something United will not be able to do.
Guardiola’s team has also been a consistent prize winner in recent years, with United’s most recent silverware coming in 2017.
Gnabry has had Champions League success at Bayern, winning the competition two seasons ago. That is expected to play a significant role in his decision to join his next club.
City would most likely only chase Gnabry if Sterling left. They have already signed Erling Haaland this summer, and Julian Alvarez will join the team in January after agreeing to terms.
Gabriel Jesus has gone and will be confirmed as a new Arsenal player soon. Because of his mobility to play across the frontline, Gnabry might assist cover the vacuum left by both Jesus and Sterling.
Meanwhile, United have yet to make a single signing under new manager Erik ten Hag.
Tyrell Malacia of Feyenoord appears destined to be the first signing after impressing Ten Hag in the Eredivisie.
Ten Hag is also hoping to outbid Arsenal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.
However, the club was shocked on Saturday by the news that Cristiano Ronaldo wishes to depart in current transfer season.
Gnabry’s arrival could help ease the blow of Ronaldo’s departure, since the German has a strong scoring record as a winger in recent seasons.
If City is also interested, United’s prospects of bringing him to the club may be jeopardised.
