Man City handed Manuel Akanji boost ahead of Champions League start

Manuel Akanji could make his debut for Manchester City as early as Tuesday after returning to the club following paternity leave.

Akanji, 27, had not featured for Dortmund this season prior to his transfer on the transfer deadline, and his first training session with Pep Guardiola’s first team squad was delayed by the birth of his second child.

Consequently, the Swiss defender missed Saturday’s Premier League match at Aston Villa and trained alone on Sunday after returning to Manchester after the rest of the club had already worked out.

Guardiola anticipates that he will be able to take Akanji with him to Sevilla for City’s first Champions League game on Monday morning, before to the club’s training session in Manchester.

The manager states that his new defender is ready for action. And despite the improbability of a starting position, Akanji might come off the bench for his first minutes with his new team, considering that each match allows five substitutions.

And while it seems doubtful that Akanji will start for his new club, he could come off the bench for his first minutes considering that each match allows five changes. Guardiola implied as much following the Villa match.

“He feels good,” he said. “He could not be here because he had a baby so congratulations to him and his wife and family, but he’s ready — he came back really well from Dortmund.”

City signed Akanji at the close of the transfer window after concluding that £15 million was a fair price to pay for seasoned backup for a group of defenders who all missed time due to injuries last season.

In the 1-1 tie with Villa, Nathan Ake replaced Kyle Walker, who had to leave with an injury.
