Man City could complete spectacular transfer window with 4 signings for £0 net spend

Almost a month after winning the Premier League title, Manchester City’s transfer business appears to be heating up as they strive to add to two impressive additions already.

Erling Haaland is the marquee signing, arriving for a sum of £51 million due to his Borussia Dortmund release clause, which appears to be very excellent value for money.

Julian Alvarez was a low-key purchase in January for just £14 million, and his form for River Plate while on loan has given City much to be thrilled about.

Both Haaland and Alvarez will join Manchester City in pre-season, and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has promised additional additions.

The main positions look to be defensive midfielder and left-back, with some departures possibly offsetting the money spent.

In fact, if they can negotiate properly, City might end the summer with a net spend of close to zero.

As it stands, City have spent £65 million on Haaland and Alvarez and could spend up to £100 million on Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella, according to sources.

Finding competent replacements in two crucial areas, whether for Phillips and Cucurella or other players, will not be cheap, therefore spending £160 million on incomings would sound reasonable.

City have already earned £8 million through the permanent transfer of Pedro Porro to Sporting, and they might earn up to £15 million more if Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is sold to Southampton.

Gabriel Jesus is thought to be worth over £50 million, with Arsenal continuing to be linked with the City No.9.

It would be a shame to lose one of City’s most hardworking and underappreciated players, but his game time will be further curtailed by the arrival of the two new strikers, so now would be a good moment to part ways if he can fetch a cost comparable to that paid to sign Haaland.

If Jesus leaves, City will have to find roughly £90 million more to generate that £160 million in incomings – or, to put it another way, City will be around that zero net expenditure before any additional acquisitions following Haaland and Alvarez.

If the new acquisitions cost up to £100 million, City may look to Raheem Sterling or Bernardo Silva. Both forwards are still tied to exits and would command high transfer fees to help reach that total.

They, like Jesus, may have less game time next season and have expressed personal wishes to either try new leagues or, in Bernardo’s case, simply be homesick.

Other player sales from the academy or City Football Group, such as Ko Itakura or Yangel Herrera, might also assist enhance the transfer budget, so City could conclude the summer earning as much as they spent.

Even if they don’t, they know they are one senior player sale away from paying for Haaland and have the option to do so with any future incomings.
