Major Man Utd decision threatens to reverse the progress made by Ten Hag and cause a divide within the team’s dressing room
Mason Greenwood’s possible return to Manchester United has already divided the locker room, and the final decision-maker has been revealed.
Since January of 2022, the 21-year-old has not featured for club or country. Greenwood was arrested just over a year ago, and Manchester United has since suspended him indefinitely.
However, on February 2, this year, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood that had been brought against him in October.
The CPS explained its decision by citing “the withdrawal of key witnesses” and “new evidence.”
Responding to the decision to drop the charges, Greenwood said: “I am relieved this matter is now over. I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.”
Later, United issued their own statement in which they revealed they would conduct an internal investigation before determining their next steps.
The club’s official statement read: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.
“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
The question of whether or not Greenwood could return to Old Trafford has persisted throughout the month. Currently, a Times article has shed light on the situation.
According to the report,’some members’ of United’s women’s team have ‘serious concerns’ about Greenwood’s return to training.
The women’s team shares Carrington facilities with the men’s team, and they allegedly “do not anticipate” Greenwood’s recall.
Some members of the men’s team are “concerned” about Greenwood’s reintegration, but this sentiment is not shared by everyone in the locker room. Others, it is asserted, “would not object.”
The Times reports that non-playing female club employees “would object” to Greenwood’s return. It is believed that some of the club’s commercial partners have voiced their concerns.
While echoing many of the Times’ sentiments, the Mirror added that Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff will not determine whether Greenwood will return to the lineup.
They claim that Greenwood was informed that the call would be handled by the club and not the management team.
