Luke Shaw closes on David Beckham’s record after a remarkable Ukraine display.

Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is in hot pursuance of a record held by David Beckham after his grand performance in England’s drubbing of Ukraine.

The Three Lions ran out 4-0 victors in their Euro 2020 quarter-final tie on Saturday night as Harry Kane scored double and Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson nodded in from corners.

Up next for Gareth Southgate’s squad is a challenging encounter with Denmark in a last-four encounter at Wembley with a spot in the final on the line.

This gives Shaw with two games remaining to equal a prestigious creative account held by former England captain David Beckham.

That’s because the Manchester United left-back picked up his second and third assists of the competition against Ukraine, leaving Beckham as the only player to tee-up more goals at the European Championships.

Shaw set up Raheem Sterling’s opener against Germany in the last 16 and helped Harry Maguire from a corner and crossed to Harry Kane for his second versus Ukraine.

Meanwhile, former Red Devils and Real Madrid winger Beckhampicked up five assists across his debuts at Euro 2000 and Euro 2004.

With age on his side and the first-choice left-back slot nailed down, 25-year-old Shaw will one day hope to match – and better – Beckham’s record.

It was another distinguished execution by the former Southampton prospect, who enjoyed a resurgent season in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Shaw drew unstinted praise from former England midfielder Frank Lampard after the game, telling BBC Sport :
“From the outside something seems to have really clicked with [Shaw] in the last 18 months.

“You always had the feeling he is a machine and you can get what you want from him and now we are seeing that.”

As well as helping England going forward, Shaw has helped England gain a flawless record of zero goals yielded in five Euro 2020 games.

Harry Kane made sure to highlight the outstanding work of his side’s defenders during his post-match interview, saying: “What a great performance in a big game.

“It’s where we wanted to be. We set out a vision before the World Cup of what we want to achieve. We are knocking it off step by step.

“The World Cup was great but we fell short, we had a good run in the Nations League. We’re in another semi-final.

“Now it’s about getting over the line, the next step that we have got to do on Wednesday.”
