Luis Suarez sends Facundo Pellistri a message following his World Cup misery

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has sent a message of encouragement to Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri in the wake of Uruguay’s shocking World Cup defeat.

Pellistri, who has yet to make his Reds debut despite signing from Penarol more than two years ago, played in all three Group H matches for Uruguay at the World Cup in Qatar, but the South American side did not advance to the knockout round.

The 20-year-old began the opening encounter against South Korea and excelled off the bench against Portugal. On Friday, Diego Alonso reinstated him to the starting lineup for Uruguay’s critical match against Ghana.

However, Wolves player Hwang Hee-Chan scored a stoppage-time winner for South Korea against the Selecao, sending the Asian team into the Round of 16 at the expense of La Celeste.

United starlet Pellistri took to Instagram to express his satisfaction in serving his country at the World Cup, as well as his disappointment at being eliminated from the competition.

“My first World Cup. It was my dream to play one and I achieved it. Didn’t have the ending we wanted, but that’s football. So sad we didn’t achieve more. Thank you to everyone who supported! This continues, we will come back stronger!” he wrote on social media.

Suarez, a former Liverpool striker and Uruguay teammate, responded to Pellistri’s Instagram post with the following comment: “We have to keep going, Facu. You will always have a rematch. Keep on giving yourself to the maximum always.”

Due to his participation at the World Cup, Pellistri will not join his United colleagues in Spain for their warm-weather training camp. The Reds flew to Cadiz on Saturday in preparation for friendlies against Cadiz on Wednesday and Real Betis on Saturday prior to the start of the domestic season.

The 20-year-old will be hoping to play for Erik ten Hag’s squad in the Carabao Cup encounter against Burnley on December 21, which will be their first competitive fixture back after the winter break.
