Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has named Martin Skrtel as one of the Reds players with whom he most enjoyed sharing a dressing room.

Suarez will make his return to Anfield to face his former club in the second Champions League group stage match between Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

He was surprisingly left out of the starting lineup against Diego Simeone’s side at the Wanda Metropolitano, which the Reds won 3-2 in a high-scoring thriller.

At Liverpool, Suarez established himself as one of the best players in the world, particularly in his final season, when he scored 31 goals and provided 17 assists in 33 Premier League appearances.

He went on to sign for Barcelona for £73 million after three seasons at Anfield, but he remembers his time at the club fondly.

“Despite Fernando Torres leaving at that time, and while it would have been amazing to play with him, just to be sharing a dressing room with players like [Steven] Gerrard, Martin Skrtel, Danny Agger, Pepe Reina, and Jamie Carragher – club legends who achieved great things – was unbelievable for me,” Suarez said to UEFA.com before their Atletico Madrid’s huge clash at Anfield.

Skrtel was at the club for eight seasons, appearing in 320 games at the heart of the Reds’ defense.

He was a key member of Brendan Rodgers’ team in 2014, when they came within a whisker of winning their first Premier League title.

While the Estonian defender will always be remembered as a good player on Merseyside, his only major achievement at the club was winning the League Cup in 2012.

Suarez, on the other hand, believes the defender was an important part of the Liverpool team.

Skrtel was sold to Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a deal worth around £5 million two seasons after leaving for the Nou Camp.

After stints at Atalanta and Istanbul Basaksehir, he is now at Spartak Trnava of Slovenia’s first division.
