Liverpool’s nightmare and dream Group stage Champions League draw scenario

The draw for the Champions League group stages takes place today (Thursday), and Liverpool could be stuck with either an extremely difficult set of fixtures or a relatively easy path to the knockout stages.

Before Thursday’s draw, SportsDias examines the best and worst-case scenarios for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s dream Champions League draw

– Porto, Liverpool, Red Bull Salzburg, Maccabi Haifa

Liverpool is in Pot Two for the Champions League group stage draw, which means they will face Barcelona, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid.

However, Liverpool will be hoping to avoid some difficult ties in the other three pots.

Pot One includes the Champions League and Europa League winners, as well as the champions of the UEFA top-ranked nations.

Due to their country’s coefficient ranking, Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull Salzburg narrowly missed out on a spot in Pot One to Eredivisie winners Ajax.

Given their incredible record against Liverpool, Porto is arguably the team Liverpool will want the most from Pot One.

Liverpool has never lost to Porto and has faced them in three of the last five Champions League campaigns, scoring 18 goals in six games.

While Salzburg were Austrian champions, they may be the most enticing team to face out of Pot Three, despite losing most of their star players from last year.

Brenden Aaronson, Karim Adeyemi, Mohamed Camara, and Rasmus Kristensen have all left Salzburg, forcing the club to bring in replacements who must still settle in.

Pot Four could also present some difficult ties for Liverpool, but Maccabi Haifa, ranked the lowest of all teams, should provide the easiest test.

Liverpool’s nightmare Champions League draw

– PSG, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Celtic

Liverpool may want to face Real Madrid from Pot One to exact revenge for last year’s final, and other matches against AC Milan and Bayern Munich would also be eye-catching.

However, given how well the Ligue 1 giants have started the season, Paris Saint-Germain will arguably be the most difficult test.

They’ve won all three league games and scored an incredible 17 goals, with Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe leading the way.

Pot Three also has a number of teams that could take on the challenge of facing Liverpool, none more so than Inter Milan.

Napoli and Borussia Dortmund would also be tough tests for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but Inter will be dangerous again this year with Romelu Lukaku returning to the club where he excelled two years ago.

Liverpool should not be concerned about teams in Pot Four challenging them to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage.

However, the Reds will want a comfortable game to give Klopp’s squad a break in what is set to be a hectic schedule. A number of teams will see Liverpool as a huge scalp and a chance to make their mark.

And if they are drawn in the same group, Celtic will be more than ready to face the Merseyside club.
