Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp delivers Manchester United transfer ridicule as Reds maul Leeds United
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has presented a transfer dig towards Manchester United after they announced the signing of Raphael Varane before their 5-1 opening day triumph over Leeds United.
Varane was presented to a sold out Old Trafford just minutes before kick off in their encounter with the Whites as he became their second major transfer of the window after Jadon Sancho.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side showed the size of the gap that still remains between themselves and Leeds as they controlled for large periods of the afternoon which was reflected in the score line.
After Luke Ayling’s early second-half stunner reversed Bruno Fernandes’ opener on the half-hour mark, the Red Devils took the match by the scruff of the neck and scored four goals in just 16 minutes to take the match away from Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
While Varane was not included in yesterday’s meeting, their other big-money man Sancho relished his first taste of the Old Trafford turf as the £72.9 million signing was brought on as a 75th minute substitute.

The signing of Varane took Man United’s spending up to the £113.9 million mark, almost £100 million more than Leeds who have brought in Junior Firpo, Jack Harrison and Kristoffer Klaesson this summer
That expenditure has expressly left Liverpool manager Klopp scratching his head as he struggles to understand how they have managed to secure those deals from a financial point of view.
He said:
“We all know the situation of Chelsea, City and PSG. What United are doing, I don’t know how they did it. We have our own way to do it. We are allowed to spend the money we earn, that we always did.
“This year we spent before we earned money with (Ibrahima) Konate because after last season, just to be clear, we cannot take any risk in this position at all.
“I’m never surprised about the financial power of Chelsea, City or United, I’ve been here long enough to know they always find a solution to these things.”
