Liverpool’s draw with Brentford ends Chelsea’s strange Premier League streak

After a 3-3 draw with Brentford on Saturday,Liverpool finally broke their strange Premier League streak with Chelsea. Prior to this week’s games, both teams had eerily similar weekend scores, but the two teams’ most recent results changed everything.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were made to rue missed chances against Brentford, while Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the season in the early kick-off against Premier League champions Manchester City.

Brentford took the lead through Ethan Pinnock, but Diogo Jota equalized three minutes later.

In the end, Klopp thought a draw was a fair result, and he emphasized his team’s defensive struggles against the newly-promoted side.

“[I’m] not sure enjoy is the right word,” he said. “It was a wild ride. They deserved their three goals for the way they played. We obviously couldn’t deal with the long balls today but we should have scored more goals.

“They deserved it. I don’t think you can control them much better, we created a lot of clear-cut chances but couldn’t deal with them defensively. These things happen.

“We should have scored more. If we win 3-2 or 4-3 we still have these struggles defensively. Toney and Mbuemo did really well. Brentford deserved a point.

“I have no problem with accepting when you play this kind of football. That’s football. You have to create things to deserve to win. They deserved a point as well because they put up a proper fight.

“I respect that a lot. In the end there were situations we should do better – and then it could be a completely different game. Their goalie should have number 10 on his shirt with the balls that he played.”

Meanwhile, at Stamford Bridge, Gabriel Jesus’ deflected effort in the 54th minute was enough to lift City above Chelsea in the table.

After a disappointing performance in front of their fans, Thomas Tuchel felt his team lacked quality against Pep Guardiola’s side.

“We changed formation a little bit at half time that should help us have a bit closer of a connection in passing and maybe be a bit more active for high pressing,” said Tuchel.

“But in general it’s not a question of formation, it’s a question of being active and of principles – how to defend and where to defend.

“It is also about individual performance. You have to escape pressure individually, you have to be sharp with your first touch, to escape and switch play. We lacked quality today, individually. It’s as simple as that.

“Also in the belief and in general and the movement, we were too static and it was too fearful.’

Both teams will now focus on the Champions League, with Liverpool set to face Porto in Portugal and Chelsea set to travel to Turin to face Juventus.
