After failing to sign Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, Liverpool may have unwittingly assisted Manchester United in acquiring Casemiro from Real Madrid.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Frenchman in order to strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Tchouameni only had eyes for Real Madrid, with Liverpool failing to entice him.

Long before completing his £70 million transfer from Monaco, the 22-year-old had publicly flirted with a move to Los Blancos.

This has resulted in Casemiro’s transfer to Manchester United.

Several reports claim that Casemiro has been concerned by the arrivals of several midfielders in recent years and has sought a new challenge.

Last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Almeria saw the defensive midfielder used as a substitute, and his long-term future appeared to be uncertain.

United confirmed on Friday evening that they had reached an agreement to sign the 30-year-old.

According to the BBC, a fee of £70 million has been agreed upon between Premier League and La Liga clubs.

And the move can be traced back to Liverpool’s failure to sign Tchouameni.

Casemiro might not have joined Manchester United if Real Madrid had not signed the France international.

Despite several injuries in the position and a growing need for a younger player in the position, Liverpool are not expected to sign a midfielder this summer.

Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have already been sidelined for an extended period of time.

Klopp, on the other hand, is content with his options.

In games against Fulham and Crystal Palace, he has used the impressive Harvey Elliott in midfield, while fellow teenager Fabio Carvalho can also play there.

“I know what will now come up, it’s clear. We said we don’t need a midfielder because we have enough – and we actually have enough, but the problem now is we get punished for something that is not our responsibility really because things like this can happen,” Klopp said after Thiago hobbled off against Fulham on the opening weekend of the season.

“Look, a transfer must make sense now and in the long term – we have midfielders, we have still enough midfielders. It is not that we lack midfielders, but it’s just some of them are injured. This is not a good situation, I don’t like it at all, but we have to see how we react on that – but for sure not panicking.”

Liverpool have been linked with midfielder Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund. The England starlet, on the other hand, is regarded as a long-term target who could be signed in a future transfer window.
