Liverpool tipped to land ‘shock’ transfer target to fix Jurgen Klopp’s midfield crisis

Liverpool are expected to back Jurgen Klopp in the transfer window and bring in a “surprise” midfield signing to address their midfield issues.

Injuries kept Thiago, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones out of Monday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United, so the German manager went with a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Harvey Elliott.

The Reds were defeated in the middle third, prompting renewed calls for Klopp to be supported in the transfer market by bringing in another midfielder.

Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund has been linked with a move to Anfield, but any potential deal is unlikely to happen until next summer.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, on the other hand, believes that Liverpool’s backroom staff will be hard at work on new signings this summer, and he sees a midfielder joining the club.

“I think there is every chance Liverpool will sign a midfielder,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“I’m sure the mice in the wheel behind the scenes at Liverpool are working very hard. I think they will look to bring that one, surprise signing in. You can see from Klopp’s interviews that he is not happy at the moment. The lack of options he has in his squad because of injuries is there for all to see. It is really taking its toll.

“I think they will be working hard to bring somebody in before the end of the window. They often go about their business quietly and then pull a rabbit out of the hat. I think it will happen again. I can see a midfielder coming in before the deadline.”

Keita has also been linked with a move away from Anfield, as the Guinean has just a year left on his contract, and there have been rumours of him moving to Dortmund, prompting speculation that Liverpool’s Bellingham plan could be pushed forward a year if the 27-year-old is offered in a swap deal.

Klopp has stated that he would like to add to his squad this week before the deadline. “It’s difficult to answer,” Klopp said. “I’m not the right person to ask. As a manager, I’d like to have more players who are available naturally.”

Liverpool may have a low-cost option in the form of Leicester’s Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian has just a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, and with the Foxes needing to sell players before bringing in new recruits, the 25-year-asking old’s price has reportedly been reduced to £16 million.

Wesley Fofana has been linked with a move to Chelsea, but if the Blues look elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers’ side may be forced to sell Tielemans, a welcome addition to Liverpool’s midfield options.
