Liverpool star offered a new contract in an move aimed to see off PSG interest
According to the Athletic, Liverpool aim to lock Naby Keita to a new contract despite his lack of playing time in order to deter PSG transfer interest.
When Naby Keita inherited the historic number 8 shirt of Liverpool formerly worn by Steven Gerrard after his £50 million move from RB Leipzig, fans expected him to live up to the expectations.
However, the Guinean has struggled to be a consistent performer, with Jurgen Klopp preferring Thiago, Fabinho, and Jordan Henderson over him.
PSG is interested in signing Keita because his contract expires next year.
Luis Campos, PSG’s incoming sporting director, feels the youngster may be a good replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who has fallen short of expectations in the French city.
Liverpool, on the other hand, is not willing to let Keita go so simply. Jurgen Klopp wants to keep hold of him because the boss has ambitions for him. In order to deter PSG’s interest, it is anticipated that he will sign a new contract soon.
Keita has only scored four goals and provided three assists in 40 games across all competitions this season, which is a disappointing performance given the price Liverpool paid for him.
Last season, the Guinean was able to bring his form to the field on a few occasions, but his spell was limited by injuries and a lack of game time.
However, given Liverpool’s ageing midfield, Keita may be better suited to serve as a backup midfielder than any other new signings.
The team would go through a transition period at some time in the future, and the Guinean midfielder’s availability may make the process go more smoothly.
Furthermore, Keita’s deteriorating form means that Liverpool will not be able to recoup the whole amount invested in 2018. It would not be prudent to take a financial loss in the sale of the 27-year-old star because the Reds would have to sign a reinforcement who would not be cheap.
As a result, Liverpool should do all possible to keep Keita at the club. He has shown the potential to be a top-tier midfielder and may be able to rediscover his form in the coming season.
Because Jurgen Klopp believes in the player, he may receive more opportunities to play if he remains.
