According to reports, Arthur Melo will not play for Liverpool again this year.

According to The Athletic, the on-loan Juventus midfielder will undergo surgery and will be out for ‘3-4 months.’

Arthur has made just one appearance for the Reds since joining on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old was not in Jurgen Klopp’s squad for Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat of Rangers.

Klopp later confirmed that Arthur had suffered a muscle injury.

And now the former Barcelona player will be out for an extended period of time.

Liverpool signed Arthur from Juventus for a loan fee of £4 million, with the option to sign him permanently for around £33 million.

However, with Arthur out until the New Year, he will miss at least 13 games.

Mello had hoped to be included in the squad for this week’s Champions League match against Rangers and Sunday’s crucial match against Arsenal, who tried to sign him last January.

His most recent setback, however, is the cruelest of blows, derailing his Liverpool career before it has even begun.

Arthur was said to be upbeat last night, with a positive prognosis following surgery, and is already focusing on the work ahead to make an impact in the crucial second stage of the season.
