Liverpool player axed from Champions League squad despite his success record against Real Madrid
Arthur Melo has been removed from Liverpool’s Champions League roster.
The team of Jurgen Klopp is experiencing a turbulent season. The Reds are currently ninth in the Premier League, seven points out of a top-four position and 21 points behind league-leading Arsenal.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are eliminated from both domestic cups and have been paired with Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, a rematch of last season’s final.
Indeed, Europe’s premier competition resumes this month, and the 16 remaining clubs were required to submit new squads for the knockout rounds.
With the January signing of Cody Gakpo and the return from injury of Naby Keta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, there has been considerable speculation about who will make Liverpool’s 25-man squad.
Arthur and Calvin Ramsay did not make Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League roster, per Sporting News.
Due to a severe thigh injury, the Juventus loanee has only played 13 minutes for Liverpool this season.
Unlike most Liverpool players, Arthur has a winning record against Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League opponents.
During his tenure with Barcelona, the Brazilian faced Los Blancos five times, winning three, drawing one, and losing just once.
Ramsay, a summer signing from Aberdeen, has also been hampered by injuries, having only appeared twice for the first team since joining the club.
Stefan Bajcetic, who has been with the club for over two years, is now on List B. Consequently, he is eligible for the Champions League squad as a player under the age of 21.
In addition, Luis Diaz was retained despite his extensive injury absence. There is hope that the winger can contribute in the Champions League’s final stages.
