Liverpool midfielder rejects Portugal call-up – still eligible for England

Liverpool midfielder rejects Portugal call-up – still eligible for England

The Portuguese Football Federation has declared that Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho has “refused” to represent his birth country at the under-21 level.

Carvalho was selected for the forthcoming international matches against Czech Republic and Japan.

However, a statement released Monday evening indicated that Carvalho had informed the federation that he no longer desired to represent Portugal at that level.

“Fabio Carvalho informed the Portuguese Football Federation, through some SMS messages, that he does not intend to continue representing Portugal at the under-21 level,” the statement read.

“This decision by the player was communicated after the call-up for the preparation games with Czech Republic and Japan was known.”

Carvalho is still eligible to play for England and was a member of the Three Lions’ under-18 squad before switching to Portugal in March of this year.

Since then, he has accumulated two goals and two assists in four appearances for Portugal U21s.

Carvalho was reportedly named to Fernando Santos’ tentative Portugal senior team for the World Cup last month, but he did not make the final 26.

The tug-of-war is likely to continue until he makes a senior-level commitment, but this may indicate that he has decided to play for England.

Whether that is the case, it will be intriguing to watch if he is selected to play for the Three Lions’ U21s in the near future, given that Liverpool teammates Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, and Tyler Morton have also been a part of Lee Carsley’s group during the previous year.

Carvalho has made 16 appearances for Liverpool since his summer transfer from Fulham. He has played the majority of his career on the left side of the Reds’ attack, with his spectacular stoppage-time goal against Newcastle in August being his most memorable moment.
